Bees take Burlington Mall car

If you attended Burlington schools in the 1970s, your teachers probably warned you about imminent armageddon due to killer bees. Well, it hasn’t happened yet. This incident from 50 years ago this month, involving our benign western bees, was probably the closest to catastrophe we’ll ever come. So-called killer bees, an “Africanized” species  that tends to be more defensive/aggressive than our native bees, have indeed made their way into the USA, but you’ve got a better chance of dying from a lightning strike.

The Burlington Mall has seen its share of freak incidents over the years. First, the roof collapsed under snow, then a guy brandished a rifle that turned out to be an umbrella, then a car fell into a sinkhole.

This double-bill stirs up many thoughts:

  1. How did Jaws get a PG rating Instead of R? A decapitated head, a severed leg, a young boy devoured in a bloody froth, a grown man tenderized near the climax. Rated PG?
  2. With 50 years now passed, maybe it’s time for Spielberg and Disney to collaborate on a new film called Jaws Meets Bambi.
