Before we had . . . buildings

Burlington Retro posted one of these aerial photos before, in lower resolution. This time there are two old aerials, and you can click and zoom WAY in.

First, the big white square is the back of the movie projection screen for the E.M. Loew’s 128 Drive-In, which is now the Target plaza on Cambridge Street near the Woburn line. You can read the sign if you click on it a couple of times to zoom in.

Next, South Bedford Street (one exit south on Route 128) with Graham’s farm in the foreground:

And here’s the same area today, about 70 years later:

  1. My great uncles farm. Lots of change just in my 74 years. Was there many times with my mother. Her fathers farm (Henry Graham) was just down the road in the valley.

  2. That is the Burlington that I remember from my childhood. Lots of room to run around in and trees to climb.

  3. I delivered the Lowell Sun to both Graham’s Farm and Graham’s turkey farm. Our South Bedford St-Lexington St intersection area neighborhood kids used to hike up to Graham’s field to camp out, and then walk into E.M. Lowes drive-in to watch the show!

  4. Wow! We used to drive from Waltham to Burlington to go to the drive-in! Great memories! The staticky speakers, the popcorn scent all over-even the creaky swing set! Love it! Thanks!
PS my aunt worked for EM Lowe’s at his home

  5. Started going to the drive in with my parents when we were young kids when they first opened, in the station wagon with pillows & blankets and finished that drive in in 1968 when I got married. Great memories.

  6. great photography bob,and wow, that last pic really illustrates the change in burlington over the years…………………carl johnson,,class of 54,piner36@comcast.net

  7. Great photos! Is there any way the photos could be superimposed on each other? I live on the corner of Bedford and 3A and I am always looking for old photos of that area. The Potbelly Sandwich shop in Wayside Commons has several photos of Burlington from the 1940s and 1950s.
