Marshall Simonds newsletter from 1980
Snapshot of June, 1980:
- CNN was launched as the world’s first 24-hour news station.
- Comedian Richard Pryor set himself on fire, allegedly while freebasing cocaine.
- The Unabomber injured the president of United Airlines.
- The theme from M.A.S.H. topped the Billboard charts.
- Larry Brehaut was called an “outstanding human being” in Burlington, MA.
Enjoy the nostalgia from Marshall Simonds on these pages. Then go here if you want the horrible truth about Mr. Brehaut, who was transferred to a small room in MCI Walpole a few years after this publication, and later died there. Sociopaths tend to fool everyone, as Needham is finding out.
Special thanks to Irene Kawalec-Menasco for this Simond Says issue. Why it wasn’t called Simonds Says is anyone’s guess. The school is named after Marshall Simonds, the namesake of Simonds Park also.

Injured the president?
. . . of United Airlines.
The article on Mr. Brehaut did not age well if you know the history. It was written about in this newsletter. https://burlingtonretro.com/2020/07/28/larrys-darkroom-2/

Wow, a blast from the past for this 1984 class member. A lot of “I remember that name”. Have to admit took me a bit to find myself in the photos and not remembering who I had for homeroom teacher. It is scary to read about this sick sociopath allowed to teach and be around children.
Very cool newsletter. I swam with Jon Scott. Wondering what happened to him in late 1997. When he and I in April and June of 1997 were swimming in the regional and states that year in the special Olympics . Was so sad when I found out he was no longer swimming with me when I found out back in September of 1997. Hope all is well with him these days. But do not have any of his contact info at all. Well again cool newsletter of the class of 1984.
Another great job RF! Thank you. You even got two different Flanagan’s in this single post! And yes, I hope everyone was safe from Brehaut. I fortunately never had him as a teacher, but many that knew him were sadly fooled; a true sociopath doing his “job” I guess 🙁 thoughts and sympathy to anyone who had to deal with him ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Lastly — apologies to Mr. Sardelis for my last will and testament remark. He was never late as I recall, he just helped me with that issue, hugely! Hey these days I’m always fifteen minutes early! You taught me well! Algebra and music, too!!
“Hurry Sundown” 😊
