Topsfield Fair? Why not the Burlington Fair?

Burlington Agricultural Fair 1890

A century ago this month, the annual Burlington Fair raised money to erect a World War memorial on the common. Which world war? The World War. There was only one until ol’ Adolph started acting up in 1939 — but that’s 14 years into the future right now.

Here are some ads for the “pretentious” Burlington Fair — and some other local events a century ago this month.

first mention of "pretentious" event, fall of 1923, to fund a WWI memorial

Unfortunately, someone died en route to the Fair in September of 1925. This article calls it the Grange Fair because it was sponsored by the Grange, a civic group that supports farmers. The word means “farmhouse” in French.

The original WWI memorial was replaced by this two-war memorial in 1954.

  1. That Fair was still being held in the 1950s. I remember riding ponies back to their barn on South Bedford St. at night after the fair one year. Riding them up Church Lane ,Down Lexington St. to South Bedford St to the Graham Farm. They were owned by Jon Graham owner of the Circle “J” Ranch.

    • If you enlarge the photo, it could be the first memorial, on the left, was part of the second memorial on the right. The middle part was the finished addition for both plaques together.
