On May 5, while awaiting trial, Smith escaped the Billerica House of Correction by climbing cables that fellow inmates had strategically draped over a wall. He bolted into the woods. Search dogs lost his trail due to too many prison officials and cops running around. Nevertheless, Smith later turned himself in. Then the local newspapers lost the trail of this story.
