A century ago this month

Gasp! A local woman had just come back from a pilgrimage to the fashion mecca known as Amherst, the hat-making hub of Massachusetts. Of course the ladies from all local towns, including Burlington, flocked to the YWCA in Lowell to hear this woman relay her findings. Everyone just had to find out what she would report!

• Millinery — The production and design of women’s hats.
• Middlesex County Extension Service — An old branch of the US Department of Agriculture that advised farmers and homemakers about everything from growing bigger turnips to making a bigger splash at social gatherings.
