Pic of the week, Dec. 27, 2023

Found in Massachusetts digital archives, labeled as “Burlington, MA” without a street or date.

There’s a Socony Oil sign on the left, barely legible. Socony became Mobil Oil in 1955, but that’s not much of a clue. The cars on the street are much earlier than 1955 anyway!

Is this Wilmington Road? Winn Street? Middlesex Turnpike? We might never know.

Gas station embers, Burlington, MA, date unknown

  1. Could that be Church Street? Those trees sort of resemble the trees on Church Street.. Gas station sign Could be a little further up Cambridge Road depending on which way you look at it

  2. Being so flat, it seems like Middlesex Turnpike might be the location. Also, power/phone poles look like something that would be on a major road like the Turnpike. I think Cambridge Street would have visible trolly tracks..

  3. Has to be a main road. Look at the number of electric wires on the poles. Plus the road is very straight and level.

  4. When did the state start inspecting gas pumps for correct and accurate measurements? Middlesex Turnpike was not well populated back in the 20s and 30s. Mostly farm land back then. Too bad the pine tree blocks the small sign. “Land for Sale “type style. Back when subdivisions were selling 25 x 100 ft. lots in Winmere and Francis Wyman Rd. into Billerica.

  5. couldi it be on Rte. 3A where the old Doucette Hardware/gas Station was. Currently the Speedway Gas Station?
